How much can I drink a day?

Caffeine has been shown to reduce birth weight and increase the risk of miscarriage, and there is no guaranteed safe dosage.

However, most reading I have done shows that a minimal amount (0ne 8 oz cup of regular coffee -- not espresso, and not Starbucks, which has almost double the caffeine content of other coffee) should be safe.

But don't forget that caffeine is also found in many carbonated drinks and in chocolate and tea. That safety level is for TOTAL caffeine intake.

I would recommend drinking half-and-half caffeinated and decaf if you are used to drinking more coffee than 8 oz. a day.

If you have any history of miscarriage, or if you have a problem pregnancy (e.g. you are older, a smoker, underweight, have health problems or a family history of problems), I would recommend cutting out the caffeine altogether.

Some people say one cup a day is okay. However, I read and was told my doctor to cut out all caffeine which I did. I did have an occasional cup of decaf coffee when I really wanted the taste. For a pick-me-up in the morning I ate a banana and the extra potassium got me going in the morning.

As long as you do not have any underlying medical conditions such as cardiac (heart) problems, you should be able to safely consume coffee in moderation during pregnancy. This would be 1-2 cups per day. Keep an eye out for other hidden sources of caffeine however, as it is frequently found in soda (pop), chocolate, and other beverages. Good luck with your pregnancy and congratulations!

With my daughter, I couldn't stand the smell... With my son, I couldn't get enough and drank it with no problems.
