That's a bit like saying how long is a piece of string. There was and is huge variation over the globe. In England however, the 'subjugation of women' began in the 1700's and by the 1800's was well under way. It was driven by industrialisation and the need for families producing large numbers of offspring for 'factory fodder' (later it became true of the Army as well, particularly after the Boer War), The Calvinist work ethic was one of the tools in putting women in the home as was the growth of the Labour movement. EG in 1880 the Mines Act prevented women from equal work in the mines as it required them to show their legs which prevented men from working properly, poor dears! Other Acts, Married Women's Property Act that removed any rights over property and gave them to the husband etc. Before all this women were often heads of families and landowners in their own right. Hope this helps.
