California was named the "Golden State" because it was established during the gold rush of 1849. It so happens that the hills are gold in the summer time, making it truly a golden state. You can find out about its gold rush history at lots of web sites. It is full of intrigue, adventure, greed, lust, heroism, everything that makes for exciting study. I've cited some web sites below. But a wonderful novel that gives the flavor of early settlers in California is Jim Houston's "Snow Mountain Passage". I highly recommend it.
