SFO airport is located 15 miles south of Downtown San Francisco. As with most airports... the nearby hotels tend to be cheap, clean places where stranded or layover passengers can spend the night in safety before their flight. However, such hotels are hopelessly dull, and then there's the noise from the jets taking off/landing.

While you *can* stay at the airport and take the BART subway Downtown (30 minutes), it's just not a good way to experience San Francisco. It's too far away from the action. And the trains stop running from 1 AM - 5 AM (there's an OWL bus service during those hours, but it's difficult to figure out if you're not familiar with the city). It's better to just pay more to stay Downtown and take a cab.

The Hyatt Regency is a nice business hotel. It's not the lap of luxury like the Ritz, St. Regis, or Four Seasons, but it is pleasant enough. Nice terrace restaurant (Montecristo) overlooking the Ferry Building, awesome atrium, and balconies for every room.

San Francisco and its suburbs are relatively safe, though crime is on the rise. Areas that are regarded as unsafe include: The Tenderloin, Bayview/Hunter's Point, Oakland, Richmond, and East Palo Alto.

Dude, downtown is 30 minutes from the airport. The hotels near the airport are cheaper, but you do yourself a disservice by staying that far out. Take BART downtown and stay either downtown. Use Expedia or something to find good deals. All hotels downtown are either cheap and crappy or nice and expensive. But everyone accepts that hotels downtown are crappy, so don;t worry about taking someone back to a crappy hotel downtown, most club girls are from the burbs so they find it exciting to be downtown, even if it is back to a crappy hotel. >:) If you need a recommendation though, go to the Canterbury.
