The phrase comes from a code (I believe WWI military code, but not sure on that) where the real message was on every second line of the full text. So you "read between the lines" of the whole message to get the real message.

It has come to mean look for something that is not explicitly shown but can be deduced from what IS explicity shown. (Just like a code)

It originated from the use of invisible ink messages written between the margins of what appears to innocent letters.

By making the ink visible again you can read the true message between the lines of the fake message. thus you read between the lines. in modern times it simply means to see the true message, not just what is shown.

i.e. In a political ad, what the ad says is "my opponent sucks" reading between the lines you see the message is "I don't suck, vote for me"

Example: "Joe worked hard at his practice and was always honest with his patients."
Between the lines is an implied meaning, such as Joe was a doctor! Didn't really say he was, but key words "practice" and "patients" give it away.

Yes.. when you read something.. or are told something to do ord whatever.. you will not be told EVERYTHING so you have to surmise.. to extrapolate meanings related to.. RELATED TO what you have been told or what you have read, etc..This means t hat you have to read bettween the lines... what you are doing is to read what is implied but not expressed on the surface
