First of all cold weather is here and the little "darlings" are looking for shelter.

Cockroaches would rather live inside than outside, which by the way is where they often go to have sex...and then come back inside. Isn't that comforting......no walking outside barefoot at night. Anyway, boric acid (Roach Pruf) or even plain Borax (to a lesser degree) under sinks, under refrigerator, blown under baseboards (you need a little puffer....like on old perfume bottles).

Mice come in through openings from the outside. Doesn't have to be open windows, it could be larger cracks, pipes through the wall, etc. Plug openings. You can buy spray foam..it's insulation that swells when you spray it around pipes. Look up, there may be a roof vent that is loose.

Do the windows in the house need caulking?? Make your house a fortress.

Ants may need a bait trap. Try mixing boric acid with sugar and putting in a small jar with a lid with small holes and putting the jar where the ants travel.

Mice.......mine get into the garage and then the house. Sorry, I use DeCon in the garage. I also set several in the attic as the little 'darlings' get up there too. They are going after the birds nests that the sparrows push into a gap in the fascia boards........argh!!

Do you have pet food stored around or bird seed? Fruit trees dropping fruit?? I had a small beetle infestation from bird seed outside and the beetles then came through a crack in the house to the kitchen in search of water.

Speaking of which, make sure you pour a capful of PineSol down the drains once a week. I'd suggest bleach instead, but it stinks. Make certain you keep your drains closed when not in use.......bathroom sink and kitchen sink.

If you live in an apartment, or even have neighbors who live close to your house, they (the neighbors) might not be as anal as you are. The best thing you can do is to set off a bug bomb or two, close all the windows & doors, then leave for several hours. When you come back, open the windows & air the house out. Hopefully, all the critters will be dead. It disturbs me that you found a DEAD mouse on your floor. It was obviously poisoned somewhere else, then died at your place. Just 'cause you got bugs doesn't make you a dirty person. They're after food, and will often go into clean homes looking for it, especially when the place that they live in starts to get over-crowded. You might want to have a little chat with your neighbors and see if you can get them to spray too, so that you can all live a little cleaner. Just remember, it's not a shame to have bugs....it's a shame to do nothing about them. <*)))><

You would be surprised the things we bring home from the grocery store that may have roaches, etc. with it...like potatoes for instance.
I'm in your boat as far as trying to afford a professional to come in but I diligently do things that prevent these sort of infestations...go to Wal-Mart, Home Depot or somewhere like that and stock up on the traps, sprays, bug bombs, and even moth balls...I put these out under my home, it's an old home rememdy that is said to keep the rodents and spiders at bay. Boric Acid along the baseboards is good to kill out roaches, too. If you have a nicely enclosed foundation under your home try putting some bug bombs under there, that helps with them too. I'm sure I'm a enviromentalist's nightmare and I don't really like using all those chemicals myself but I hate the bugs worse so....
It's best to get on top of it now before it gets out of hand. Good luck, Hon.

Two reasons. One being that the neighbors have treated their place with pesticide which has sent them away to your place. Plus it's getting cold out now and many insects are looking for new digs to keep warm in during the winter months. Your only alternative is to call in an exterminator. Clog up any openings in the walls and under the sinks and behind the stove to seal off any opportunity for entry by unwanted guests.

Here's a kind of gross answer, but it works. There are glue traps that can make everything but the ants stick. It may catch the ants, too, I've just never used it for that. We have spider problems. Buy a bunch and put them out against your walls. It also helps you to see where they're coming from.

There must be a new way into your house, like a crack in the foundation or some other sort of crack. Go look and when you find it, fill it with that expanding foam. use the traps to catch the varmints and toss them in the outdoor garbage right away. Ants can be taken care of with ant traps, which are actually bait traps. The ants take the poison back to their sisters and queen and they won't be back to bother you again.

The cockroaches may go into the glue traps. I am lucky to never have had them. If not, call you local county extension agent or look it up.

There are wildlife/pest control people who can deal with all these problems, but they are costly. The only other thing that I can think of is borax:

Good luck! Try not to be too creeped out!

if you see a mouse there is a chance that you have more than 7 more hidden, is a matter of ecology if there is food available the litters will be bigger, maybe there is some dog food around, or trash containers open, traps nor venom will control, ants, cockroaches and mice eat something locate the source and will end your problem.

I'd check out the outside of your house for possible entry points. They could be finding the food near by and just living in your house. Keep your garbage well away from your doors and get some poison for the insects and rodents that you have.

Could be your neighbors, or the roaches could be what they call water bugs and coming in through your drains. Also, mice will come in there also when the weather gets cold. Seal around your pipe under the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Mice can squeeze through slits so small you wouldn't imagine. Get a cat to help catch them outside if you feel it is safe enough to have one.
The roaches can be treated with one or two exterminator visits...it may cost you around $100 bucks, but it will be worth it.
