My friend mentioned that he's wearing a pirate costume for Hallowe'en. Another friend cautioned him, saying "you know, if you wear pirate gear, you're telling people that you're gay". I had never heard this before, and frankly it sounds like just another urban myth. But maybe someone here knows.

So is it true? Is a pirate costume on a man a code for gayness, like an earring in his right ear? Or is the whole thing just another silly rumor?

Thanks!

It's just a costume. Halloween is the only time when people can dress up however they want, gay or not, and it doesn't matter. No one will think that you are gay if you wear a pirate costume. It's hot this season, I say go for it!!

Well, when i think of pitrates costume, I get the movies "Pritaes fo the Car..." the main character wasn't close to being gay(maybe as in happy/drunk gay) more like a ladies man.. I guess it came from the idea that pirates/marines are all men on the ships and some would prob. be gay.
People might say differently regarding earings(left/right ear).
But personally I wouldn't get the kind of message... only if i see two pirates huggin...

it's just another silly rumor. what on earth would it stand for anyway?! A friend of mine, who's pretty straight, was a pirate last year... and I was so bummed that he had a girlfriend. He was THAT HOT. I now go to the school where EVERYONE dresses up for Halloween. As in, not the people with school spirit (I'm in college), but EVERYONE. And I can GUARANTEE there'll be at least 50-100 guys dressed up as pirates, just because pirates, frankly, they rock. It's just a fact.

If a man wears a hot-dog, or first-class-male costume is he indicating that he's straight?

It's a costume.

It's no more a code for homosexuality than the earring in the right ear is nowadays. Pirates are extremely popular right now, and lots of straight guys are trying to benefit from the whole Johnny Depp/Orlando Bloom mojo that is associated with pirates.

No. Not true. If he's wants to/is having sex with another guy he would be gay. Wearing a particular costume on Halloween does not make one gay.

In the south if you wont to wear a queer costume no one says a thing, because we have redneck gays here and they will kick there a s s ' s if someone says something unmannerly, so go a head wear what you wont, if someone says something kick em in the groin area..it doesnt matter what people think, its what you think that matters, have fun Y'all
