The absence of light. For humans, our most sensitive sense is sight, so in the dark, we lose our greatest faculty for perceiving what's around us, causing feelings of insecurity for most people.

Since you posted this in Visual Arts, darkness means a color that is the opposite of a light color. To make a color darker you have to add black to it. To make a color lighter you add white to it. Some people refer to it as tint (light) and shade (dark)

Absence of light. Darkness is not a thing. It is the lack of a thing-light.

If I was mean I would say "You"....
But otherwise one definition can be "The absence of light"
Biblical description adds "Null & Void" to darkness, until God said: "Let there be light" ...and there was light.
