It was repackaged metal and punk with timber clothing (because it got it start in the state of Washington). It was a gimmick like emo use to be called folk music, techno plus dance music use to be called disco, and rap use to be called beat neck poetry.

Yeah, it's not really fair. When I was fourteen there was grunge. But now all fourteen year olds have is emo, or punk-pop. Sad.

From what I remember, it seemed to have a lot to do with messy hair, Nirvana, Jeff Buckley, baggy jeans and girls idolising Drew Barrymoore (circa 1995). Think the ideals were that there was no point having ideals - cause everything was a little depressing.

Well, first of all, it's just grunge. Emo kids don't call themselves Emoers (sorry to be a *****, but that's a pet peeve of mine). Anyway, Grunge was about the ideals of punk rock. It was about living the way you wanted to and not getting sh!t for it. It was about being dirty and angry and free and beautiful and f^cked up. It was a beautiful movement, but it basically brought punk in to the mainstream and ruined it for those of us who actually could relate to what was being said. THAT was grunge.

"ideals of grunge" is almost an oxymoron.
