OK, absolute value |r - 8| basically means that if what is contained is negative, make it positive, otherwise leave it alone.

So, we have two ways for |r - 8| to equal 2

One is if r - 8 =2 , which is normal

The other is if r - 8 = -2, because if r- 8 = -2, than |r - 8| would equal 2, which is what you are looking for

So, solve both

r - 8 = 2

r = 10

and

r - 8 = -2

r = 6

Hope I could be of help.

just look ... r-8=2 or -(r-8) = 2 solve this and you will find
r=10 or r =6

Case 1

Ir-8I = -(r-8) if (r-8) < 0

=> -r+8 = 2 => r=6

Case 2
Ir-8I = r-8 if (r-8)>0

=> r-8 =2 => r=10

Hence there are two answers => r=10,6

Is it 1r-81=2..........1r= 83.........r=83 or
I r-8 I=2......... r-8 = either 2 or (-2)..........r = 10 or (-6).

Sorry, but I'm kind of confuse by the orignal equation. Hope that my answers can help you.

r = 6

you're looking for the absolute value.....so we need the absolute value of -2= 2. so, to get -2 in the left side of the equation, r= 6.
