My computer frequently requires restarting and sometimes offers random programs I have not selected. I sometimes wonder if mechanical parts such as hard drive bearings or head drives lose their precision tolerances and actually wear out. Reinstalling programs, etc. sometimes helps, but the problems recur. Are there any particular signs to look for?

dell has a lot of good deals,, but beware all their customer service is handled in either bangledesh or india!! heres the best link in Dell ,, its the as advertised on tv section,, it usually has the lowest prices of all the deals

you can also check online retaliers such as Newegg.com, Tigerdirect.com and also other big manufacturers like Hp, Gateway , or Emachines,,

id say , if you knew how to build and upgrade comps you could do that too, but obviously if you knew how you wouldve already done so, so that rules that out, but if you know some one who does and could, you could upgrade to a nice simple socket 478 motherboard and run and inexpensive, 2.66ghz celeron D processor on your current setup for about $100- 120 bucks or so,, it all depends on what you use that comp for and what applications you use,,,,, it is a viable option if you cant afford to pay $300 or more for a new one , and that would give you speed comperable to some of the outdated new ones!!! but this combination, would still give you good results,,,

"sometimes offers random programs I have not selected" I think you have a problem with spyware or virus.Normally 7 years old computer is obsolete. If i'm not mistaken, you're most probably running on Pentium 3 CPU or AMD Athlon. Hard drive bearings or head drives do lose their precision just like a CD-Rom. 7 years is enough dude, just change it.

Yeah, it's sounding like it's ready to go to that big scrapheap in the sky. I'm not sure about hardware problems, but at this point it's probably not got the processing power to handle a lot of common applications.

The signs to look out for are exactly what you're describing: needs frequent reboots, does random crap you don't want or tell it to do, is really slow to do stuff.

Yeah, dude. I'm sorry to say that it sounds like your lil' buddy is about to head for the last roundup in the sky.

When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them.

Dell has had some **serious** problems with customer support recently. I live in Austin, TX which is where they are based and know all about it.

I bought a complete, new system from them with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.

I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.

Good luck!
