because they have had since forever the tradition of having tea at whatever time. Britain is known for drinking tea and this resulted from royalty hosting pasrties and such to have a break and served tea and cookies.after taht it spread to all the classes and still, people today take their 30 minutes to enjoy their tea with a friend or by themselves: it is more aristocratic.

It started with Queen Elizabeth that tea-time has become a culture in Britain as a mean of socialising. The Britain has their heavy breakfast early and do not have lunch. Their dinner is always quite late not to mention supper. So, in order to curb their hunger before dinner, the Queen had came up with tea with light snacks like cake and cookies. Since then, tea time becomes a little meal before dinner. It is called low-tea. For workers who had to do manual work, they have rice, noodles, meat and wine and this is called hi-tea. I was quite surprise when first learnt of this : )
