For popularity: It eradicates the disease for good (roots out the disease).
Not popular: It takes a lot of time to completely eradicate the disease. People want results straightaway. It is like an RMP giving a strong dose of Antibiotic to show results.
Medicines are effective, there is no doubt about it.
To be honest people come to Ayurved only when the disease is not cured by Allopathy.

The reasons for popularity are: Good amount of marketing and making common man understand that the treatments rendered are free from ill effects.
Reasons for un-popularity are: Wrong kind of marketing and lack of scientific data (based as per the protocols designed by modern medicine). Here it is essential to understand that the research methodology adopted during ancient times was different and the expectations from medical fraternity today are therefore different. The classics of Ayurveda have described the results in the form of summary but the methods are not described. The modern medicine gives more emphasis on the methods which Ayurveda can not fulfil. For example Ayurveda has described 9 different formulations for prevention of habitual abortions and IUGR (Intra Uterine Growth Retardation). It means that the study of embryological growth pattern was already done during the ancient times without having equipments like USG/ X-ray/ MRI etc. Therefore it is impossible to convince the world about the scientific basis of these formulations. Govt. is also not providing the essential facilities for such studies so the formulations remain in the books and gives lot of inputs for the research scholars to talk about these products but only theoretically not supported with any clinical data. Govt. can depute scholars to conduct clinical data, design the protocols and support them with documentary evidences. The side effects of Ayurvedic preparations is becoming hot topic in recent past. But why people do not understand that a commonest allopathic drug (Paracetamol) is also hepato-toxic? How these products are sold as OTC? Even then why do we make an issue of Ayurveda as un-safe? Basically it is a wrong notion that Ayurvedic medicines do not have side-effects. The correct sentence will be "Ayurvedic medicines have minimum side-effects if proper manufacturing technique is adopted and given with proper knowledge in a correct dose". If proper care is taken while manufacturing, the products are bound to impart minimum side effects but if short-cuts are adopted, they may become really un-safe. Unless concrete steps are taken by the Govt. the picture will remain unchanged even after 100 years.

People often get attracted to Ayurveda due to it being interesting and perhaps some of the claims are true.
People get turned off by Ayurveda because some of the claims might seem ridiculous.
After all, ayurveda is handing down some ancient traditions and those ancient traditions must withstand the tests of modern science and practical application. Ayurveda must prove itself nowadays.

Unpopularity-People are not awaired of the benefiacial uses of Aurvedic, they go for the branded names as they came to knoe from advertisements and all. Auervedic medicines are the best n India is the best place for this type of treatment.
Popularity-Still not so popular in India de to unawareness, moreover forigners are rushing here specially for getting the aurvedic treatment.

Mary Mary Mary: It is simply NOT true that natural things cannot hurt us...let me introduce you to arsenic or foxglove, or nightshade or...well...??
As for Aryuveda; I would have to point out that while millions of people know about it that is because they live nearby and millions of others do not...while I find it fascinating I am simply NOT willing to balance my doshas...my gosh I can barely remember to take my thyroid everyday...
