Being knighted will only entitle you to be called "Sir" not "Lord". To cop Lord you need to be appointed to the House of Lords. That can be achieved either by inheriting a title, or by recommendation from the British government. The Queen gets a right of veto on the government appointments, but I haven't ever heard of her exercising it.
Of course, if you're not British, then an official name change is probably simplest. Its probably the simplest way even if you are British, come to think of it.

It's a stupid old-fashioned title bestowed by a queen in a friggin castle. Just like the story books you read when you were a child.

If you want to be called Lord Jay then just go ahead and call yourself that. Who can argue with you? Who says you don't have the right to bestow that title on yourself. Go and do it Lord Jay.

Regards,

Prince Tony.

Well, you have to be knighted by the queen. However, I heard of a site where you could purchase a small plot of land about a square foot in England that would grant you a title, might not be official though

Go get your name legally changed. Saw it on Friends. Pheobe became Princess Consuela Bananahammock. I heard of a used car salesman one time who legally added "Fair Deal" as his middle name.
