As far as I am concerned, the best artist/group today is Godspeed You! Black Emperor, a Canadian ensamble, three noisy electric guitars, cellos, violins, a drummer and a percussionist, winds section, two bassists, a real party, in other words.

As for the ten songs, in no particular order, or, actually, in the order they come to mind:

-That one song by Morrissey, you know, THAT one.

-Killer Queen, by Queen.

-Norweigean Wood, by The Beatles.

-Texas Chainsaw Massacre, by the Ramones.

-Red Angel Dragnet, by The Clash

-Two Girls Kissing, by The Swirlies

-My Way, by Sid Vicious (I know it isn't any good at all, actually, but damn is it emblematic!)

-Sometimes, by My Bloody Valentine

-Cross Bone Style, by Chan Marshall (actually, by Cat Power, but it's really all her there)

-Christmas Song, by Mogwai

And I'm working on the eleventh, just be patient.

And on the hip hop thing, yeah, I don't like it one bit either, but you do have the choice of going right ahead and ignoring it, which is what I do -and I am most definitely NOT the only one. Forget MTV, that stuff is for teenie boppers, go straight to the good stuff.

No favorite genre, just like what I like, but I do have a tendency towards post-rock, I guess they're calling it.

Enjoyed answering your question, Bye!

I am a huge fan of Country Rock, or rock that is at least influenced by country. Also, anything influenced by the blues. This may mean that i define rock differently to you, i don't know as your question didn't go too much into specifics. Heres my top 10, not in any real order, perhaps alphabetically as i scroll through my playlist. Not the best of all time but good songs for one reason or another. Just for something different.

1. The Rolling Stones - Angie. One of the softest songs the stones ever did, but i'd still call it rock. the lyrics and the melody gell perfectly and the song carries you along.
2. Tom Petty - Zombie Zoo. The man who carried American rock and roll through the 70's and 80's had to get a mention somewhere. I love the lyrics in this song.
3. Dire Straits - Love Over Gold. Another Softy, but brilliantly sung and showcases Mark Knopflers brilliance on Guitar.
4. The Who - Pinball Wizard. The Who, possibly the greatest rock band in history. Not their best song, but distinct in it's introduction which really sets a great mood.
5. The Eagles - Hotel California. Definately not my favourite eagles tune, but the song is a hit across all generations, and has quite a good lyric to it.
6. Lynard Skynard - Free Bird. A tribute to Duane Allman, the man who Eric Clapton was in awe of, and one of the greatest and most inivative guitarists of all time. The song gives off a nice vibe and as far as tributes go is pretty good.
7. U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday. Great song, conveys the feeling it was made convey, which draws you into the song. Nothing like documenting an actual event in song, and it was done very well here.
8. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven. There's a lot to say for a song that draws you in from the first note. A brilliant peice working up throughout the song and deserving of the praise it has recieved over the years.
9. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City. Another one of those songs that draws you in from the start. Not one of his most acclaimed songs but showcases the remarkable ability of the man. I don't think i've ever seen anyone put more effort into giving a performance than the boss.
10. AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long. While it's not Bon Scott it's still AC/DC and the impact of this band has to be recognised. Took rock to a whole new level.

There are still people out there who love rock, despite the rise of hip hop music. As long as we are still being influenced by artists of the 50's and 60's then there will always be rock music.

Rock has not lost its essence because of hip-hop, but I think that commercially it has begun to cater to it. Hip hop is inherently repetitve and I notice rock following suit.

I prefer acoustic rock or hard rock but not much metal.

My Top Ten: (This list only took a few minutes, I'm sure if I really thought about it, the list would change some)

10) Over the hills and far away - Led Zepplin
9) In the End - Linkin Park
8) Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
7) Running down a dream - Tom Petty
6) Where the streets have no name - U2
5) Bohemain Rhapsody - Queen
4) Dream On - Aerosmith
3) Jeremy - Pearl Jam
2) Money - Pink Floyd
1) Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns and Roses

Kashmir-Led Zeppelin
Close To The Edge-Yes
Black Star-Yngwie Malmsteen
For The Love Of God-Steve Vai
1983(A merman I will Turn To Be)-Jimi Hendrix
Whole Lotta Love-Led Zeppelin
Hell's Bells-AC/DC
Crossroads-Cream
Hello Goodbye-The Beatles
Stairway To Heaven-Led Zeppelin

Classic rock cannot be matched by anything which has been released in the past 15 or 20 years, though unfortunately rock music has seen a decline since the advent of hip hop.

There are no current artists I would pay even half price in order to purchase their music and none I would sit through in concert.

Wow, that's a loaded question, but here goes
10 songs are
Baba O'Reilly by The Who, Dust In The Wind by Kansas, Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp, Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead, For No One by The Beatles, Going To California by Zeppelin, In The Light by Zeppelin, When The Levee Breaks by Zeppelin, Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, and Lola by The Kinks. I'm sure there's 30 other songs I'd be willing to throw in here though. Altogether, obviously, I think classic rock is far and away the greatest genre.
As far as best group today, I'd easily say Radiohead, though I loved Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots, and am starting to love JET.

Tough to pin it down to just ten, but I'll give it a shot.

Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin
Paranoid-Black Sabbath
Smoke on the Water-Deep Purple
Riders on the Storm-Doors
The Loadout-Jackson Browne
On the Dark Side-John Cafferty
Satisfaction-Rolling Stones
Flying High Again-Ozzy
Barracuda-Heart
Locomotive Breath-Jethro Tull

I don't think hiphop has anything to do with it; I don't think much of modern rock because it seems to me that modern artists are trying to fix something that aint broke.

Rock will always be rock. It doesn't get better or worse. Sometimes it just goes away only to come back again, rediscovered.

Hip hop is an enhancement. Look how the sampled funk hooks of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg let to George Clinton coming back and influencing bands like theRed Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys.

My favorites in no particular order:

Running to Stand Still: U2 (totally underappreciated track on best album ever)
Difference: Pearl Jam (tons of emotion in Eddie's voice)
Dirty Water: the Standells (I'm a Red Sox fan)
Voodoo Chile: Jimi Hendrix (Greatest opening guitar hook)
Lie in Our Graves: Dave Matthews Band (takes me back ten years)
Subterranean Homesick Blues: Bob Dylan (possibly the first freestyle ever)
You Can't Always Get What You Want: Rolling Stones (Their answer to the Beatles ever changing identity)
Dream On: Aerosmith (timeless classic)
Redemption Song: Bob Marley (the last song he ever sang)
Welcome to the Jungle: Guns and Roses (scared the crap out of me when I first heard it at twelve-then I rewound it and heard it over and over and over)
Smells Like Tean Spirit: Nirvana (defined the music scene for the nineties)
