Who is or was the best band from the U.S.A?

I'm not sure you could call the eagles a rock band in this day and age, but that's what they are to me. Go the eagles!

Those answers really make me sad. Obviously it's all about opinion, and what do you mean by greatest? Do you simply mean the best rock band from the USA or the rock band that most encapsulates the USA? Either way, I'd have a strong urge to say Creedence Clearwater Revival. Lynard Skynard is also a great band that deserves some mention also. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullets anybody? The Band?
All great bands, all American. Here's my final answer, and many will disagree because they're really weird...

That's a pretty difficult question. The Ramones, The Doors, The
Grateful Dead, Aerosmith, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Guns'n'Roses,
Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Velvet Underground, CCR, Lynyrd Skynyrd,
The Eagles, Metallica, Talking Heads, Alice In Chains and
probably many others to choose from. The Rolling Stones aren't
an American Rock Band. They are part of the original British
Invasion. If I had to choose one, it might be Van Halen, because
of their longevity, or maybe the Grateful Dead.

If not rolling stones must be aerosmith because they outlasted time. but i personally don't think they're great, i still choose matchbox 20:) and oh yeah, rolling stone's main act's son, jakob dylan's band the wallflowers.
Really, I don't think aerosmith is that great, most of their fans are just riding with their popularity. They're not even good looking, 2 things: ugly and old.
Oh yeah, I love most songs of the smashing pumpkins too, I miss them terribly, I say one of the greatest bands of my time!!!
