Disappointment: "Hannibal" by Thomas Harris

I think that Thomas Harris was bribed in to writing this sequel to "The Silence Of The Lambs". It stunk! Fortunately, the screenplay and movie were pretty good.

Won Me Over: "Farewell To Manzinar"

As the child of a Japanese internment camp refugee, I never wanted to read this book, because, I had grown up hearing about camp and I thought that I had heard it all. Later, I read it and understood the plight of Japanese-Americans and I had more insight from teenager, rather then that of a small child.

The Da Vinci Code was a big disappointment to me too. I think because of all the hype I felt I ought to read it as a book lover so I could have an informed opinion etc, but I thought it paled into comparison, if not a bit of a rip off, of Robert Ludlum's Bourne Identity. I am not very well informed on the religious front so maybe that's why I didn't find it so shocking/outrageous/innovative ( .... whatever :-) !!!)

As for pleasant surprises, I purely read for pleasure & am not forced to read stuff for studying so that situation hasn't occured recently. I usually pick books from my list of numerous fave authors, mainly crime/mystery/adventure types.

Though I have been told by someone I respect immensely Digital Fortress is a much better book than Da Vinci Code so maybe I'll give it a try now as a result of your question .... thank you & happy reading !!

The book that disappointed me most was "Life and Other Near Death Experiences" by Mil Millington. I loved his "Things My Girlfriend and I Have argued About", and "A Certain Chemistry" was a laugh-out-loud book that also had elements of good science, but the third, which I pre-ordered before publication and couldn't wait to read, was less funny and rather chaotic and improbable.

At the insistence of my partner, I reluctantly began (blush) "The Da Vinci Code" and, ridiculous though the whole premise was, and despite its quasi-religious roots and all the hype, once I suspended my judgement and disbelief, I found it to be a page-turner in a boys-own-adventure-yarn sort of way.

After the first few chapters, I truly thought I would love "Saturday" by Ian McEwan. My opinion changed as I got deeper into the book; I was practically throwing it down in disgust/ boredom. Then the ending; I found myself in a swell of tears. So, it was a rollercoaster book for me.
Disappointments? The Hobbit, Frankenstein, anything by Stephen King after Gerald's Game, with the exception of the Dark Tower series.
Surprises? Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. In Her Shoes. The English Patient.

disappointed in 'the giving tree' by shel silverstein. its a very disturbing book to read. and i still dont know why its so over-rated.

i like 'little prince' by antoine de saint-exupery and 'is there a human race' by jamie lee curtis. i added the little prince because as a child, i've been told to read this book but kept ignoring it for the longest time. and i read it when was already 20 yrs old and thought to myself...how could i pass such a great book. 'is there a human race' is also a really good picture book for kids and kids at heart...

Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fanni Flagg was a disappointment to me. Her other books were very funny and insightful as well. They were well written. This book, however, seemed flat by comparison.
