so is their anyplace like a cd account where you can invest large sums of money that can guarantee your minimum principal investment but also have a higher interest than most cd accounts.

putnam money market. daily accrual rate, essentially no risk, no early withdrawl penalty. yield over 5%

Look at money markets. Sharebuilder's cash account is actually a money market account that right now offeres 4.4% interest. Some places might offer better rates. Also look at I-bonds and TIPS which both go up in rates when the core inflation rises.

Treasury bills from govt & like. As you lose purchasing power in cds they are all bad but not paying state tax might help. 4% Cd (or whatever rate) - 25% tax = 3%. Inflation higher so rather than being "safe" & "making Money" you lose. Reits; utility stocks & the like better.

how high of a return? it's easy to acquire 6-9% in interest by purchasing bonds. but, they are not guaranteed. but but, the chances of default are also very unlikely. to be on the safe side, diversify the bonds.
