Virginity is definitely a slippery slope.

They "virginity = intact hymen" idea seems a little antiquated. I have several friends whose hymens were either broken through some accident --as mentioned, horseback riding or a heavy fall can do this.... or even a medical practitioner. (One friend had her hymen broken by an ultrasound wand when she had a potential tumor in her bowels -- does that mean she lost her virginity to a 50-something doctor when she was eight?)

It's also a little too easy to say that virginity = vaginal intercourse. That would tend to indicate that a girl or boy who had anal intercourse or oral intercourse was still a virgin, which seems to me to be cheating. Especially since anal intercourse has resulted in pregnancy in many young women.... does that imply a virgin birth?

Unfortunately, there are no real rules for this sort of thing. I think the generally accepted definition is that one is a virgin until one "has sex." What sex is, however, is up to the individual to define. Most people don't consider masturbation to be "sex" -- although it is obviously sexual.

While we're on this topic, I ought to add that YES, girls can masturbate WITHOUT breaking their hymens. In fact, most do.

Hmm. In a technical sense, a woman is not a virgin once her hymen is broken. But, like many others, I believe that until you sexual intercourse, your still a virgin, even if your cherry's been popped. With guys it's basically the same thing, first time having sex with another person.

according to traditional customs still accepted today in only a few(and i realy mean a few) regions,a man is not considered a virgin from the start.only women are considered virgins until they are penetrated by a man.in more sevier laws, it is decreed that a woman is unchaste even if she masturbates or anything if this sort and it is known by the public.

a girl's hymen can sometimes break doing simple activities like exercising or horseback riding. A girl doesn't lose her virginity until a penis is inserted into her vagina. A guy doesn't lose his virginity until his penis is inserted into a a females vagina. you are still a virgin if you masturbate.

Don/t put too much stock in the 'quit masturbating' angle. Masturbation is natural and awesome. If pain is your only concern, don't worry so much. It really isn't so bad - more discomfort than pain. If you just want to preserve your hymen, don't penetrate at all. There's no standard depth.

with men, virginity means when the penis comes into contact with a vagina. for women, if you are masturbating but nothing is inserted into her, then the cherry cannot be broken. If she is inserting something into herself, then she is not a virgin
