Given the formula: wave velocity= wavelength/period
Please determine the velocity of this wave in FEET PER SECOND and MILES PER HOUR. Assume the wavelength is 30 feet and the period is 10 seconds. Remember 1 mile= 5280 feet.

I need to know how to do this. I am confused. Thanks!!!

As they say, divide wavelength by period first:

velocity = wavelength/period = (30 feet)/(10 seconds)

That gives you 3 feet per second. Now all you have to do is convert to miles per hour. There are 60 seconds in a minute, and there are 60 minutes in an hour. Additionally, there are 5280 feet per mile. This is all of the information you need to convert. Just setup the conversion factors so that your units cancel. For example, you know that you want to get rid of "seconds" and turn it into "hours" so your factors have to be setup so that the "seconds" on the bottom of "3 feet/second" gets canceled with a conversion factor that has seconds on the top, like "60 seconds/minute." Thus, you have:

( 3 feet / second )*(60 seconds / 1 minute)*(60 minutes/1 hour)*(1 mile/ 5280 feet) = 2.045 miles per hour

If you'd like to check, use Google (see the link below for an example). If I enter "3 feet per second to miles per hour", Google spits out (via its automatic "Google Calculator") the result:

3 (feet per second) = 2.04545455 miles per hour

the wave moves 30feet in 10 seconds. there you have it.

velocity is 3fps. or to convert to miles per second, 3/5280=0.000568. convert this to miles per hour 0.000568x3600=2.045mph

1) v = f x wl 2) wl = v / f 3) f = v / wl You'll need a calculator for the last part. The other two you can do in your head.
