OK, in Brazil, people *sell* their organs. For quite a bit of money.

But organ thievery...I think it's an urban myth. If you were implanting an organ, it would have to be of a certain quality, and I don't think you could just hack a kidney out and expect to sell it on the black market.

It also happened in Koma and Dirty Pretty Things (DPT was a great movie.) But as far as stealing kidneys--the story has too many folklore elements to be believed as a true news item.

As far as other illegal surgeries that people consent to--yeah, it happens, and it's terrible. I saw a thing on TV about this guy who gave a guy "pec implants" that were women's breast implants. He used SPATULAS for retractors on the guy's chest--it was so nasty! Illegal Botox (shady quality control--could make you die or get paralyzed and the paralysis is from the chin down for a month), bad liposuction, breast jobs that aren't on the up-and-up...illegal surgery by unqualified practitioners is real, and it's dangerous and horrible.

But I don't think you'll wake up in a bathtub full of ice with a note saying, "Call 911" anytime soon!

They do happen. I was watching a show a while ago telling about a real case where a woman wanted liposuction in her arms, and an illegal doctor -- claiming he practiced the way he did because his clients simply wish to have their surgeries and recoveries in thier oen homes instead of having to go to some scary hospital -- performed the surgery, and the woman ended up bleeding to death after he left.
I also once recall someone handing out fliers on a street in LA for abortions done in one's own hotel room!

Sadly people sometimes do take it upon themselves to play doctor. I still remember hearing about the guy trying to give himself lypo with a vacuum cleaner. He actually wound up dying of an overdose on painkillers and his buddy who supplied them is now cooling his heels in the pokey for selling medicine without a license.

they happen more in places like brazil but they do happen in the us once in awhile.

not only that but many medical professionald will treat people under the table. which is illegal. and do it for a reduced cost so that they do not have to pay taxes on that money.

Sadly, it really does happen. Most shows that seem to be so untrue are the most real ones.
