I only loan money to my close friends...
I've learned the hard way that when you're too nice, people take advantage.
Of course, this is hard sometimes because some people really do need the money for something and if it is actually serious, i'll give it. But when it's for something stupid, i won't. However, i'm a sucker if they need food or a drink. I just feel bad holding them back from the basic necessities.
Overall, ... i'm uncomfortable with loaning money to people that are not so close to me not because i'm cheap but because i'm afraid they may start to view me as a doormat.

I don't feel I should loan my money to anyone unless it was life or death. If this is your case I'd tell your friend that you have a thing about loaning money to people just because you need it or something.
I was 7 and lent my lion king video to my cousin for his daughter and never got it back lol. That's different but if you do it your probably going to do it again and again, at least your friend will be a little more independent :)

I only loan what I can afford to loan without getting into money troubles. Also, some friends have a history of not paying me or others back, and I don't lend as much to them. Usually I just use my best judgement on trusting the person to actually pay me back when he or she says they will.

NO NO NO NO
A true friend would not even ask! My Mr. is real bad about this when he was single. Shoot he tells me of the hundreds this guy owes him and the thousands another guy owes. These guys never show up again after he does this. I put a STOP to it! Never has anyone he loaned money to ever spoke to him again. One guys hides from him! Shoot Mr. would take a gun in exchange but this guy hides from the Mr.......
A good way to ruin a friendship is loaning money.....
There was a couple I had a friendship and the kids had friendship with. They always seam to want my medication (I no it says not to share but the husband was in pain so he said) they always made me feel sorry for them cause they had this pain and that. Mr. put a stop to this told me to wake up they are drug addicts, and now they do not talk to me anymore......
So called friends will use you if and only if you let them.....hard lessons to learn....
P.S.
Wow read other responses and it sounds like we are talking a couple bucks, this is no big deal, here have it (no we are not rich by No means). I thought we were talking serious money here lol!
My sister loads around 30 grand to a so called boyfriend, never did he repay her, ever!

I have personally seen it turn out both good and bad. However the first thing that comes to mind, is if you don't loan money to a friend in need, what kind of friend are you?

One bitten, twice shy. In other words I'll let them borrow money once and if they don't pay it back, never again. Of course there is a limit as to how much I'll loan. I mean, you can't loan what you don't have or what your going to need to pay a bill or something like that!

Depends how much money it is and how close of a friend they are. If it's not so much like under 20 dollars of course I'll loan it to them no questions asked, more and I want to know what for and it depends.

I prefer to loan money to people I don't like. That way I get something out of the deal when I never see them again.

All I know is they better pay me back or else. But it's good to LOAN a friend money when they need help, as long as they pay you back. But if it's a really important cause didn't it wouldn't matter
