I'm advising a high school senior -- just a friend, not in an official capacity. Typical teenager, he has no idea what he'd like to do with his life.

His exact comments are: "I like working with my hands, but having to think about what I'm doing. I dont think I could ever work a desk job." I agree: there's no way he's right for a desk job.

He currently cooks in a fast food place. "All motion, no thinking." He hates it.

Any suggestions as to what kind of career might fit these requirements?

How about something like appliance repair? It requires some thinking and problem solving to figure out what's wrong, and a repairman needs extensive knowledge of the appliances he's repairing. If he does house calls, the setting will be changing every day.

Go to Community College and learn carpentry and become a carpenter's apprentice? Airplane mechanics are in short supply.

Mechanic - as in airplane mechanic - a very good job with room for advancement.

Architect - lots of drawing - does he like to draw?

Just a couple of ideas.

I really don't think this is enough information to go on. Is he mechanically inclined, artistic. Does he like to help people. How about a diesel mechanic, or sculptor, capenter or massage therapist.

Mechanic, welder, they may not sound like glorious jobs but my sister's fiance did both for a few years (he's the same kindof guy likes working with his hands and likes to have to think about what he's doing.) and he loved it.
