I have a Sony Vaio laptop which I bought used, and the fan has always been a bit noisy. I have taken it completely apart and even oiled it, but that hasn't helped. It may just be a design flaw; the fan is very simple and doesn't seem to have any part that can wear out. The noise is just a low-level, ongoing rattly sound which is somewhat annoying. And it only happens when I'm operating the computer on AC. Using just the battery, the fan is much quieter. Any advice? Thank you.

I had the same problem, take the old fan out and go to Frys and buy a replacement, they know about the problem and they will be more than glad to recommend a quite model, they are about $12.00

There could be many reasons your fan is running too high. 1. There is a lot of dirt in the laptop. If you can take the laptop apart, you can clean the dirt away with a can of compressed air. 2. There may be a process that uses up a lot of memory. Could be a virus/spy-ware. Run your anti spy-ware and anti virus. This could help. If these don't work let me know. Extra Details: There is a grease that goes on the CPU that allows for proper contact with your heat sink. You may be running out of this. To fix that get a new heatsink (it should already have grease on it).

Sounds like there is something wrong with it, you should get it replaced.

I don't hear a thing hardly at all with mine and I have a gateway.

This can cause MAJOR bad stuff if it is not working right. Did you think about maybe that is why they sold it to you?

They don't cost a lot to get replaced and could save you a lot in the end.
