You are incorrect about the law saying you cannot be sued in a state where you do not live. You can be sued in any state in which you have enough of a connection to be considered within the jurisdiction of the court. In this case, Oprah was doing business in Texas, and this gave the Texas courts jurisdiction.

Mr. Wise is so wise!! LOL LOL !! I don't believe that could be the law, because anybody in the country could slander you, and you could sue them. I don't remember the details, but Oprah said something against beef while she was in Texas doing a show, if I remember correctly. I'm from Texas, and I only remember thinking both sides were stupid.---AFTER READING CCHANGE45's answer, I had tell you guys, that his joke about steer rustling being more serious, is actually quite true! I really don't know the laws nowadays, but I know that in the late 60's, someone told me that if you shoplifted a steak in Texas, it came under the cattle-rustling laws, and was a HANGING OFFENSE! I could have been naive, but I believed them....not hard to believe when you grew up in Texas......

OMG! i love Mr Wise's answer! i couldn't stop laughing :)

Anyways, here's what happened:

During a show about mad cow disease with Howard Lyman (aired on April 16, 1996), Winfrey exclaimed, "It has just stopped me cold from eating another burger!" Texas cattlemen sued her and Lyman in early 1998 for "false defamation of perishable food" and "business disparagement," claiming that Winfrey's remarks subsequently sent cattle prices tumbling, costing beef producers some USD$12 million. On February 26, after a trial spanning over two months in an Amarillo, Texas court in the thick of cattle country, a jury found Winfrey and Lyman were not liable for damages.

Aurora did the best answer: the facts are straight except for this. Oprah moved her show from Chicago to Amirillo, and totally seduced the town.

Those cattlemen were left with egg (and other material from a cloaca) on their faces.

No she said on her TV show with Howard lyman, that is National ofcourse that she would not eat beef ever again because of mad cow...and that of course made viewers freak out...and this in turn as we know..would bring the demand down for Beef and all beef companies...and one of the big companies i think that provide beef to most states is in Texas...and they sued her...

but Oprah does not eat beef.

It had something to do with her banning beef or the slaughter of cows, not sure of the exact details. She was visiting Texas when it happened.
