i have a guy friend who is REALLY nice to everyone, including me. i'm not the nicest person in the world, and i feel guilty when he's so nice to me. because i'm not all that great of a friend. he compliments me all the time, says hi in the halls, and tells me that i'm smart. if i reply " oh you're smart too" that would sound...cheesy

how can i be nice and stop feeling guilty about not being as nice as him?

Instead of feeling the need to "Mirror back" his compliments, just say "Thanks, you really brighten my day" or just "Thank You".
If you wanted to give him a sincere compliment, you could say to him "I hope one day I can learn to be as nice & kind as you". I am sure you have observed other character traits about him that you could offer him some praise, or admiration for, but you don't really have to return a compliment that has been given to you.

It's OK, you can stop feeling guilty about not being as nice as him, as long as you try to learn by his example.

being nice is not just saying hi n hello n flattering. being nice is given support to your fren wen needed, being there for them in good n bad times.
If he is saying you are smart, you really could be smart. That is just a compliment, & you could compliment him some other time on what u really like about him, tell him something like you are a very sweet friend of mine, or give him a friendship card or something. That would reduce ur guilt of "not being nice".
But actually there should not be any guilt on ur part coz if you are not being nice, neither are u being bad to him, right?
Good luck!

Maybe try to find out more about Him So you can throw a compliment His way sometimes. Think deeply about why you're feeling guilty. Is it because you feel you SHOULD be nicer? If so, write a list of qualities you would like to have and practice having them. Everyone should always strive to do better and improve their quality of life. Sounds like you're at the stage of awareness of yourself.
just be friendly back, say thanks, be sincere, and be the best you!
Good Luck!

It sounds like you're feeling guilty because he compliments you and you don't compliment him back. You are not required to do so. Just simply thank him. Very sweetly with a smile. That would seem very nice of you & you should not feel guilty.

Ashly had the right answer! You be yourself! If others don't like your style, make it their problem. There will be someone out there who like a girls who is categorized as a ( B) by the opposite sex. This doesn't mean you have a cold heart. the seed is probably part of your patch of genes.
You can try and change. Going to confession or hang closely with this friend. His style may rub off on to you!

Some people are naturally genuine, friendly people. The rest of us have to work at it.If you are not that way dont feel bad.As long as you are kind to others...why do you say you arent a good friend? Im sure a guy that nice wouldnt be friends with you if you werent.Cut yourself some slack!

well first it's obvious that you would not be genuine in your compliments to him so don't ever say something you don't mean. Receiving compliments is nice and your only obligation is thanking that person for the compliment. If you give him a compliment make sure you mean what you say. I rather you be honest with me than fake.

Stop comparing yourself to him. Just be as nice as you can be. It's not a contest. He'll accept you for who you are, so now it's time for you to accept who you are. It's a good sign that you want to be a better person. Keep trying and be happy with the progress you're making.

You don't necessarily have to return a compliment, it's fine to just say "aw thanks." or something like that.
There doesn't really seem to be much of a reason to feel guilty, it doesnt seem like you did anything wrong, it's just he is really nice. Don't feel bad.

Appreciate his compliments, or give him a Tickle Me Elmo TMX. It's a nice way to express how happy you are that he's your friend. Also, visit this site http://www.upkb.com/elmotmx.php for more info.
