catharsis:

The definition of catharsis means: a purification of the emotions by vicarious experience. This definition is most often used when talking about drama, or the arts, with most authorities agreeing that the term was first introduced and used in this context by Aristotle to define the effects of tragedy on the audience in his work titled The Poetics

Beyond interactive theater,,,IE: Rocky horror Picture Show,,, the idea of theater IS TO ENGAGE THE AUDIENCE,,, on many levels, individually, and collectively.

That doesn't mean they have to dress up, or carry banners, or call out lines they already know,,, but it could mean applause often,,,even out of place. It could mean that the audience relates so closely that they are IN THE SCENE?

If an Actor fails to involve the audience, then that Actor isn't doing justice to the part, the writers, the crews, the premise of the craft.

When I see an audience leave a theater, or film, I hope they take the preformance with them, even reviewing, it, chatting about memories it jogged, or wiping tears away,,,etc.

The stage offers a unique quality of story-telling. In no other forum will the audience have the opportunity to watch a story being told by real, live people. It allows the audience to see mistakes by the cast, which would be edited out in a movie. It's an extremely intimate setting, even in an enormous theater.

It varies from just watching, to deciding the actions taking place on stage, as in improvisation shows.
Audiences evaluate the work being done onstage throughout the performance.
