I just bought my first grandfather clock. It is half size (hangs on the wall). It was pre assembled. I cannot make the pendulum keep ticking. There is one weight in the middle of the pendulum at the bottom. It also has 3 AA batteries. Two batteries are for the chime sound and the other is for the face of the clock (to keep time). It looks like it also has a magnet for the pendulum. The big circle on the pendulum looks like it is hanging a little croocked, so when it swings, there isn't a completely fluid motion. I would like to make it work before I try to take it back (it was the last one and was at a clearence price. Any advice will help.

Get a piece of card behind the pendulum, let the pendulum hang free, mark the spot. Now, move the pendulum slowly, to one side, until clock goes "tick", mark the spot on the card. Gently, move the pendulum to the other side, until the clock goes"tock". The distance 'centre to tick' should be the same as 'centre to tock'. Halve the distance 'tick ' to 'tock' mark where the middle is. adjust the clock on the wall to get the pendulum to hang free to your mark, recheck.....

It has to be hanging on the wall completely level. Use a level on the top of the clock to make sure it is hanging straight.

What does back and forth mean? Depending on what that means, T can either be 1 or 2 seconds. T=2pi/omega, where omega is (g/L)^.5. So T is approximately 2(3.14)((L/9.8)^.5). Now use algebra to solve for L.
