i've had what i thought was dandruff since 3rd grade. i had tried everything from head and shoulders, selsun blue, etc.

but it just made it worse.
i went to a dermatologist and he told me i have seborrheic dermatitis.
he prescribed some prescription shampoo that worked for awhile but stopped working after awhile and some scalp treatment you put in after i shower called synalar. but it just makes the skin drier after i put it on.

he said it can never be healed but i would like to use a more natural way of going about treating it or controlling it at least.

any ideas?

I have skin conditions that worsen when I am in a dry climate. I have found that Omega oils really help the situation, such as the kind you get in the refrigerated section of a health food stores. Udo's is a good brand, but there are others less expensive. Be sure to store in a refrigerator. I personally like the taste, but some of the flax oils are somewhat bitter. BLend in some soup or on a salad if it is a problem for you. I hope it helps. You may also want to do some oil or conditioning treatments for your scalp that are not medicated or regular over the counter products, which may contain preservatives and chemicals that are irratating and drying. Use a paraben free product such as made by Aubrey Cosmetics. It could also be beneficial to work with someone to provide essential oils or flower essences to add to the scalp treatment. (I am not affiliated with any of Aubrey products, just speak from experience as someone who was chemically sensitve for years and did not realize, your skin is your largest organ and absorbs toxins readily --over the counter "beauty products" and "therapeutic shampoos" have enough in them to bother folks who are senstive. best of luck.

There is a common skin condition called scurf which is caused by Sodium Lauryl (and Laureth) Sulfate. Its symptoms are similar to those of Seborrhea Dermatitis. Which would explain why the meds worked for a while then appeared to stop - its possible that the seborrhea went away, while the scurf stayed. Try a shampoo without these chemicals and see what happens in a month or so. Brands include: Earth science (also free from fragrances, which can be irritating to an already sensitive scalp) Jason's (works fine), And I've had very good luck with Aubrey's Calagula Shampoo for dandruff and seborrhea. It doesn't lather worth a darn, but if I alternate these around I get good results most the time. When all else fails, I use kiss my face bar soap (yes, bar soap) for a couple of days (rinse with a tablespoon of vinegar in a quart of water then rinse again). I know it sounds like a pain, but its better than being flaky and itchy

Neutrogena has a product called T/Gel and a couple others for this purpose some have medication in them, but they are't too harsh. You'll most likely have to use every day or so. Not too expensive and no prescription needed.

May want to go the the health food store and check out natural products for shampoos and such too, the shampoos you've been using may be setting off an allergic reaction or too harsh for you too.

Take cod liver oil tablets on a daily basis. Cod liver oil is excellent for hair, nails and skin. It should help oil your scalp from the inside and prevent the dandruff. Also try to include some oily fish in your diet.

You need to take something internally to really resolve the problem. External applications (topical) of ointments will relieve the symptoms but only temporarily, and the source of the problem remains. Try a tablespoon of hempseed oil every day.

Try shaving your head with electric clippers. Wash your head at least morning and evening.
