1. $24 fringe = $100 wages
100/24= 0.24 (basically $1.00 in wages for every $0.24 fringe)
so.. $5100 fringe divided by 0.24= $21,250
does that help you understand it?
HINT: the answers above mine are wrong they read the 5100 as being the wage the guy earned not the fringe as its listed
2. 1 hardcover = $16.50
1 paperback= $4.95
30 X 4.95= $148.50
(then divide this by cost of 1 hardcover)
148.50/16.50= 9 hardcover

1) $5100 divided by $24 = 212.5
212.5 times $100 = $21250
2) $4.95 times 30 = $148.5
$148.5 divided by $16.50 = 9
9 hard-cover books.
Think about how the numbers relate to each other. For every $100 you have you get $24. So if you got $200 you'd get $48, etc. Write out all of the numbers as you come across them and give a varable to them, it helps. Like with the first one, 24 F (F=fringe benefits) and 100 W (W=wages) and 5100 F. To find what number is needed to make 24 F into 5100 F you need to divide the last number(5100) by the first number(24),(5100 F / 24 F). See you're trying to find what F equals. F equals 212.5. So to find the new wage, you must times the old wage($100 W) by F (212.5) to get $21250 W. The other one does kinda the same thing. Hope this is helpful, don't give up on trying to get this stuff, I know it's hard. Good luck with the math.

$24 / $100 = 0.24 (24% benefits)
If benefits are $5100, then wages are $5100 / 0.24 = $21250
jeffsgirl originally was a little off on this answer because she didn't carry enough decimal places through the calculation. She originally took the approach $100 / $24 = 4.166666667 and then rounded this value to 4.17. After multiplying $5100 x 4.17, she obtained $21267. If she had multiplied without rounding, she would have obtained the correct answer the first time around: $5100 x 4.166666667 = $21250. I see she's corrected the answer now!
Actually, it seems like several people made this same error or the $5100 x 0.24 = $1224 error and have corrected their answers now!
$4.95 per copy x 30 copies = $148.50
$148.50 / $16.50 per copy = 9 copies

Question 1
$24 fringe benefits for each worker whose wage is $100.
$1 fringe benefits for each worker whose wage is 100/24.
You can now work out easily for any amount of fringe benefits.
$5100 x (100/24)= $21,250
Question 2
30 paperback book cost 30 x 4.95 = $148.50
In order to know how many hard-cover books to sell,
$148.50 / $16.50 = 9 hard cover books.

24/100 = $24 benefits for every $100 wages
$5100/X = $5100 Benefits For X wages
24/100 = 5100/X
24X = 510000
X = $21,250 in wages
$4.95 x 30 paperbacks = $148.50 cost of all paperbacks
$148.50/$16.50 = 9 hardcover books

1)
5100 Divided By 100 = 51
51*24 = 1224
$1224
2)
Multiply the number of paperback copies by 30...[$148.50]
Then divide...$148.50 / $16.50 = 9
So the answer is 9 hard -cover books
