As an excellent hunter of rodents they help to maintain some degree of balance. Too many rodents eventually will damage crops and get into buildings where they cause damage and carry disease.
Many fires are started by rodents chewing on wiring and they destroy clothing and even make holes in wood that allow cold air to leak in during the winter thereby requiring the homeowner to burn more energy to heat the building. Or cool it in the summer.
Some mice carry a type of pneumonia that is quite dangerous to humans. I advise you always wear a mask if you must remove a mouse nest.
Rabbits eat a great deal of crops if left unchecked. If my neighbor catches them in his garden they end up in a pot with the carrots and potatoes!
With no hawks about to control the rodents, I doubt my neighbor and I could have a garden. The rabbits, mice and others would sneak in at every opportunity and eat it up.
Hawks tend to thin out the slowest and weakest first because they are the easiest to catch thereby reducing the odds of sick rodents transmitting their disease to other animals or humans.
They occasionally will clean up animals that have died naturally in the wild which also helps to remove items that could act as a catalyst for disease. Flies feed on dead animals and plant their eggs which means more flies. By helping remove that from the environment they deprive flies and other germ carrying insects of food and reduce the chance for an overwhelming presence of insects.

Every species of animal and bug has a defined role in the world. Why would you ask such a question? Hawks are awesome birds of prey. Just the beauty of them alone is a benefit to the world.

Not only are red tails hunters catching rodents and other vermin but they are also scavengers, they are like vultures and work like the garbage men of the area tidying up the deceased.

Oh my,
Keeps the rodents down. Which in turn eats the grain farmers grow which in turn is made into bread which in turn is hopefully what your mom buys you in the supermarket.
Also they are a great site to see as they are flying in the air and making that sound they make! It is real cool when you watch them ketch there food!

Population control of mice, rats, rabbits, snakes and whatever else they eat. They are also used as an indicator species of ecosystem health.
We have tons of them around here...they are one of my favorite birds to watch. I've seen them catch everything from mice to snakes...although they seem to prefer cottontail rabbits.
