I would definitely suggest E.M. FORSTER'S "WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD". It is an English classic in it's own right and begins as a comedy of manners and eventually evolves into a gripping melodrama. It was Forster's first novel, while living in Italy. It was published in 1905 and has wonderful themes regarding the British middle class and features lessons in love and tolerance. It is truly worth a read!

How about "Northern Lights" by Phillip Pullman.
It's good enough to read, hard enough for a good grade in honors english of you report on it well, and is similar, kind of, to what you've read.
Good luck!

Try writing one, with a twist, on Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" or one on the deeper meaning of the God vs. Devil aspect in Stephen King's "The Stand" or, finally, one about the story "A River Runs Through it" of which I cannot remember the author's name.
Hope these give you some good ideas.

A Tale of Two cities is a classic, and if you might get brownie points with your teacher for reading, though I'm not sure if you would like it.
