when a news item is heard on the street, they say it is 'on the tape'-- is this on reuters? or where is this piece of news flashing?

The tape refers to the "ticker tape" which used to be the way that stock market data was disseminated. The modern day equivalent of this would be that scrolling bar at the bottom of the screen on financial television such as CNBC.
