The character, why did she leave? What was the reason for leaving the show?

No, what excuse did they use to get her off the show? Like to make the character go away? Did they say she was on maternity leave on the show too?

When a F.B.I informant, who was part of an ecoterrorist group, was raped, SVU was sent to investigate, but the woman didn't want any help. The woman was upset and she, and her group, tried to blow up a building,the FBI stopped them from blowing up the genetic research company in time, but the head of the group escaped. So they sent Olivia to infiltrate the ecoterrorist group, in Oregon, on an undercover operation on the season premiere of season 8. She will be back on the show next week, and she will still be undercover.

Towards the end of last season, Benson and Stabler realized that their personal relationship was interfering with their professional one, as they'd become so close that she wasn't willing to risk his life in order to catch a killer in a standoff.
So, Benson asked for a new partner and transferred to the computer crimes unit. But her first 2 cases involved SVU anyway, and she decided to go back to being Stabler's partner in SVU. This is all in the 2005-2006 season; her character was doing a lot of desk work to cover up her pregnancy.
In this year's season premiere, she infiltrated an ecoterrorist group and is now working undercover with the FBI (the plot somehow originally had something to do with SVU -- it was a bit of a stretch, but still a decent episode). "Olivia Benson" officially doesn't exist, according to the NYPD. Benson will be returning on the Oct 31st episode.

The character Olivia Benson didn't leave she was reassigned to an FBI investigation because she made contact with the crime ring the Feds were trying to bring down. Mariska Hargitay is busy being a good Momma to her recent baby and hopefully will return the show soon.

She went undercover as a member of an ecoterrorist group on the season premiere after a F.B.I informant was raped. I think they sent her to Washington. She should be back next week or the week after.
