sounds like the gas valve isn't working. if you are not sure what the gas valve is, follow the two metal lines (pipes) from the pilot light back to the valve. make sure the valve is in the on position, not just the pilot position. Just for fun, make sure you have the thermostat turned to heat and not off first. If neither of these help, time to call the man It could be the thermostat, but I doubt it since the fan comes on. Could be your heater exchange. In any case, whatever it is, you can call around and find the best price. I know it's frustrating, but here comes winter & you and the kids need heat.
If you decide to get electric spaceheaters to help out, get the ones that are sealed with oil inside that heat up (they look like an old fashioned radiator). They work great and are often on sale around $40. Keep them a few feet from walls and objects to be safe.

If you just lit the pilot , you should check to make sure the knob on the gas valve is turned to the on position. There is an index mark on most gas valves and the knob is marked off...pilot...on. If the valve is still in the pilot position than turn the t-stat off, push the knob down and turn it to the on position. Then turn the t-stat back to heat.

check the gas valve as mr godzilla suggested.

dont mess with the stat you will only make things worse in most cases.

it sounds like a thermal limit switch or a flame roll out switch....possibly a flame sensor....at any rate call a tech to fix it
