Even if there are no gods, there are still people who believe in them and who try to get others to believe in them as well. Why shouldn't some of us speak out against this?

Agree 100% with you.

The Believers unfortunately suffer from self righteousness which gives them a strange kind of ego whereby they think they are responsible to reform the poor non-believers who are s...o ignorant!!

I really hate this type of subtle ego and indeed would like to put them in place whenever the opportunity arises - but my experience with them is that they are utterly incorrigible!!

You have a right to choose, that right includes not listening. There is a subtle racism on both sides of the religous debate. The non-religous don't want to hear it and think the religous are ignorant, same goes for the religous. There is no true understanding from one side to the other. If you want to speak out, learn what your speaking out against without a slanted view, don't judge the whole of religion by one section of that spectrum. The religous feel the same way about non-religous, so there is an unachnowldged simularity in both sides. I feel personally that the combination of religous people with non-religous people make a sort of field alertness, each one could point out flaws in the other if they bothered to listen to each other. You just have to get past the racism of either to do it. I see both sides making claims that each ignore or do themselves, you have to look at yourself just as hard as them to understand the communication breakdown. A good person is a good person no matter if there religous or not, to bad neither side fully acknowledges that part.

You can speak freely. If you do against "your "god there are the others ,in other religious beliefs , who are waiting to blow it up and exploit it.. so you can have your opinion and let the others have. Comparatively, in Europe, sucha system prevails . slowly religion is losing its grip.

In the developing coutries , it is a different matter all together. By providing food, shelter , education and health care these religious leaders are indirectly blackmailing the millions to believe in God. So long as social injustice prevails the silent believers will swell.

I think the only reason is because religion, for some reason, gets to get by any situation unscathed. For this same reason, people feel strange insulting religion, feeling instead the need to apologise for accusations and try not to offend as much as possible, even when destroying the foundation of belief itself. (This is completely different from people who argue about abortion. In those arguments, people can freely state their opinions without feeling threatened. However, when arguing about religion, it brings about a threatening feeling.)

As for what this reason is, the only thing I can think of is the importance of religion in society. Believers in religion make up a lot of the population, and, if you anger them, you're pretty much screwed over. It probably doesn't help that, a few centuries ago, people were killed and forced to convert if they didn't believe in the dominant faith. Even if we've gotten over those barbaric times (at least somewhat), we still remember it happening, which may add to the reason why we step so carefully around it.

But, I agree. This should stop, and it gets ironic to think that some religions preach about the freedom of humans, and yet they tells their followers to force people to convert.

As for why people haven't spoken out, it's very likely that religious communities try to downplay and hide such occurances in order to keep a firmer hand on their followers. Also, oftentimes people get MUCH hate-mail from strict believers, and if the person who spoke out against this aspect of religion ever wanted to run for a political position or anything of that sort, they would fail horribly thanks solely to close-minded followers of the insulted faith.

But, to be honest, I'm getting kind of annoyed with people trying to convince me that my opinion is just plain wrong, without even using actual proof against it. Since I'm an atheist, many of my Christian friends get a bit... freaked out, I guess... And they decide that they should try to convert me to their way of thought. The farthest anyone has gone so far was to give me notecards with phrases from the Bible on them along with a book about God and teenagers for my birthday. While it doesn't go directly against it, it still seems like my right to religious freedom is being encroached...

Because science has been a thorn in religion's side ever since they collided, science just hasn't openly been anti-religious, while many times religion has been anti-science. Sometimes we forget how strong the church can still be, they have influence on billions around the globe, and they could take you down easily. If there was a heavy collision between science and religion, the side with the most faith would win that war.

I really hope folk do not believe in any god.

Now when one speaks of God the Father and God the Son (Jesus Christ) and God the Holy Ghost. You may choose to say anything you please, God has given us all the privilege to make choices, and if God does not take your choice from you what man thinks he can? Yes dear you may choose to believe or not to believe the choice is yours, although one must realize that choices have consequences.

Just remember they are doing it because they care about you - they want you to be saved. Say "thank you", walk away, and do your own research. How can you speak out against people caring for you?
