Thinking good or bad things are caused by representative spirits is an overly simplistic way to view the world. Every action has consequences for good or ill. Everything interacting in the world creates a web of actions that impact one another. For example, imagine your car is hit by a drunk driver. Would you chalk that up to an "evil spirit" who waved it's magic wand and conjured the drunk driver from the ether? Or would it make more sense to realize that drunk driver was a person whose life has led him to where he is? Perhaps he had a bad day and took to drink, and perhaps that bad day was caused by emotional problems which ultimately resulted from being raised in a poor quality family? It just so happens that particular chain of actions intersected with yours on one day for no particular reason, but was simply the way things work out. Thanking good spirits or blaming evil spirits is superstitious nonsense.

You're talking about the "devil horns", right? I don't think it's supposed to attract bad spirits, or anything like that. It's just part of rock n roll, like long hair and electric guitars.

On the VH1 special History of heavy metal Ronnie James Dio claims to be the first person to use this symbol. He says that he saw his Grandmother use this symbol to ward off evil spirits in her home.

I heard one time that it means I love you or something. But I use the sign at rock concerts. And I don't believe it's bad, not in my opinion. I don't believe it's the devil horns or whatever. But people will think what they want to think. Signs will mean what you want them to mean. It's not bad if you don't perceive it in a bad way or as a bad thing. At least, I don't think so.

If you have VH1 or VH1 Classic, keep an eye out for when and if the artist Dio talks about this on one of the channels' metal specials. I ebleive he claims to be the creator of the sign, which he got from his mother or grandmother, etc. I tcould be someone else who invented it. But try looking into Dio.

it doesn't attract any bad spirits... we're already all there! it's a symbol to rally around, a signal that it's time to get crazy. sometimes it's shown to express awe at a moment when the band gets to a crescendo or guitar solo, or just whenever the dark urge seizes you.
