A professor gives students a 10 page research paper. S/he gives them 2 months to do it. Most students don't start until a week before it's due. Why is that? Any theories? Get it over with early! Why put the extra pressure on yourself?

I feel the exact same.
I have no idea why people would do that to themselves.

Personally, I need that extra time. Just in case I have a question about something... I have the time to ask my teacher about it. And I'm less stressed out. I'm not freaking out.

Plus, I need that sense of accomplishment before I can go out and have fun. Or else... I would just keep thinking about the assignment. I need to get it OVER WITH in order to have a really fulfilling leisure time.

So we're on the same boat when it comes to wondering why people wait the last minute to do things. I mean... it's college. Why the crap would you pay so much money and procrastinate... risking just throwing all that money away like that? It's pointless.

Maybe it isn't procrastination. Maybe the student has other obligations, i.e. a job, a child or two, a family, etc. Then again there is the spell of laziness that continues to strike between the junior year of high school and the senior year of college. Sometime people crank out thier best under time pressure. Some pressure is good for the body. It keeps the mind young and vibrant...at the same time it can cause neverous break downs...I agree with the asker, don't put the extra pressure on yourself...get it over with. That way, you can use the extra time to relax and laugh at the other people in your class that stayed up the night before getting the work done!!!

Personally, I could always find something better to do as long as I knew I had "time" to do the work before it was due. Then I would wait till the last minute and do a mediocre job, then be disappointed with myself because I knew I could do better. I did this all though grade school, high school, and college. If it was something I was interested in, I did a bit better, but not much. Actually, if I am interested in the topic, I start off pretty good doing the research, but when it comes down to putting it together, that's when I lose interest. (If I am not interested in the topic or not good at it, I wait until the very last minute.) Then when it comes down to the final edit, bibliography and all that, I throw something at it because it's late and I am tired.

Maybe we think some brilliant idea will come to us? The teacher will cancel the assignment? Truthfully, I do the same thing when it comes to going to the DMV, etc., so I guess it is just a bad habit. You think I would have learned when I had 16 weeks to do a project and I ended up taking 2 vacation days less than one week before it was due to start/finish it.

I have been out of school for 15 years, but still study part-time. I have always left assignments until the last minute. It is because I don't enjoy doing assignments (talking with friends or watching TV is always more interesting). Fortunately, for me the pressure gives me an adrenilin rush that lets me always get things done on time in the end. While I am usually an A student anyway, I do admit I would get even better marks if put the time in and started early.

I just saw a show with Bill Gates (Microsoft) and Warren Buffett (really wonderful billionaire old guy who made his money investing); Bill Gates said he'd been PROUD of his reputation, in college, of being the guy who "never studied," but who pulled whatever was needed out of his butt at the last minute. He was shocked (SHOCKED!), to find that, when he entered the business world, that that kind of behavior wasn't applauded! Personally, I think students do this because there's just so much happening every second of the day, and they're constantly playing catch up.

I work better underpressure.
Whenever I have an essay test, I just look around the room and do nothing until the last like 15-20 minutes. That's when I bang out an A essay, my conclusions are usually crappy because that's when I run out of time but I still get that A.

Oh I comprehend your project o.ok. , i'm a procrastinator too :D in any case , do no longer issue there remains time you're waiting to do it . you basically might want to concentration on your artwork . Spare some day vacation of your on a daily basis routine on your homework and make timetable to divide your workload. reliable fulfillment :)

Its the idea that people work better under stress. If i know i have two months to write a paper i might sit down to write it but whatever I write has the likliehood of being bull...When one knows he or she only has 5 days to write a ten page paper, ten pages of beautifully written info usually comes up. If u know u HAVE to write it or risk failure of the class you will.

Good Question! I guess students do it because they feel they have all the time in the world. That is how some young people think. They think only for today!

My guess is because most people just don't like homework. My husband is currently pursuing his BA in accounting and he sometimes does the same thing and he is an excellent student. Good question
