Thinkpad is simply the Brandname of IBM Laptops.
However there are several categories of laptops
1- Notebook = This is usually your smallest, easiest to carry around laptop. Usually these are slower then laptops or desktop replacements but usually have longer battery life and significantly lighter
2- Laptop = These are usually your mid-level portable. They are pretty much a compromise between a notebook and a desktop replacement
3- Desktop Replacement = These are usually quite heavy (compared to notebooks or laptops) and suffer from shorter battery life. However they often have larger screens and faster computers. Generally these are built for gamers who like to go to friends houses for LAN Parties
