The prefix signation stands for the Class, i.e., C class, E class, S class, G class, CLK class, SLK class, SL class, M class, R class, and the CLS class. In Mercedes nomenclature, class is the "model". For the AMG options, the numbers are rounded up or down to indicate displacement in liters with the decimal point missing, 55 is shorthand for 5.5 liters, 63 is 6.3 liters, etc. Standard models have longer 3 digit numbers, like 320, 350, 500, 550, 600, etc., for 3.2 liters, 3.5 liters, 5.0 liters

AMG is the manufacturer. They are a division of Mercedes Benz
C, SL, SLK etc is the model series. These letters are the same as the Merc models, to a C55 is a C class, a SL65 is an SL class etc
The numbers afterwards are AMGs engine codes. A C55 has a 5.5 litre engine and an SL65 has a 6.5 litre engine. The non AMG cars would have C550 and SL650 model numbers.
AMD took the last zero off to make the badge more distinctive.

Actually the Prefix letters are the standard Mercedes Benz Class designations. All of the 55, 65, 32, 43, 36, etc are AMG models. There isn't a base C55, SLK55(32), E55, etc. They are all AMG models. Every now and then I see a CLK430 or something like that with AMG as well and I find it amusing.
