Can someone show me how to solve these problems? I need to know the steps and the answers on how to do these:

1/4(5b + 11) = 19

2/7(4m - 18) = 12

-5/6(9 + 2x) = 40

Thanks!

#1 - Multiply both sides by 4 so you get 5b+11=76
Then you subtract 11 from both sides 5b=65
Last, you divide by 5 so you get b=13
#2 - Multiply both sides by 7/2 so you get 4m-18=42
Add 18 to both sides 4m=60
Divide by 4 m=15
#3 - Multiply by -6/5 and you'll get 9+2x=-48
Subtract 9 from both sides 2x=-57
Divide by 2 x=-28.5

Hope this helps you!

Work outside in. Multiply both sides by the reciprocal to get rid of the fractions. Then move the numbers to the opposite side. Finally divide by the number in front of the unknown...

For example:
1/4(5b + 11) = 19

Multiply both sides by 4:
5b + 11 = 19 * 4
5b + 11 = 76

Now subtract 11 from both sides:
5b = 76 - 11
5b = 65

Now divide both sides by 5:
b = 65 / 5
b = 13

You should double-check as follows:
1/4 ( 5 (13) + 11 ) =? 19
1/4 ( 65 + 11 ) =? 19
1/4 (76 ) =? 19
19 = 19 check
So the first is b = 13

You can follow the same pattern for the others.
2/7 (4m - 18) = 12

Multiply both sides by 7/2
4m - 18 = 12(7/2)
4m - 18 = 42

Add 18 to both sides:
4m = 42 + 18
4m = 60

Divide both sides by 4:
m = 15

I'll leave the final one to you. Just remember the reciprocal of -5/6 is -6/5.

For the first equation
multiply the two side by 4
Result : (5b+11) = 76
5b = 76 - 11
5b = 65

b = 65/5
b = 13

It's the same thing for all the equations.

Multiply the second equation by 7 each side , then divide by 2 and add 18 , divid by 4 and you will find that m = 15

the result of the last one is -28.5

1. Multiply 1/4 by the numbers in the parenthesis

(5/4b + 11/4) = 19

2.multiply both sides by 4 to cancel out the denominators

5b + 11 = 76

3.Solve for b

5b = 65

b =13

2006-10-24 22:49:12 · answer #4 · answered by Up_In_Smoke 2 · 0 0

First equation:
0.25(5b+11)=19
5b+11=19/0.25
5b=(19/0.25)-11
b=((19/0.25)-11)/5

Second:
(2/7(4m-18))=12
4m-18=(12/(2/7))
4m=(12/(2/7))+18
m=((12/(2-7))+18)/4

Third:
9+2x=40/(-5/6)
2x=(40/(-5/6))-9
x=((40/(-5/6))-9)/2

Hope this helps. Be careful with parenthesis!
