I can't for the life of me, figure out why most republicans are so against stem cell research. Stem cell research has been proven the most promising, useful tool in the past 50 years for the research and development for a cure to some of humanities most horrific and debilitating diseases.

Yes, we need to support stem cell research. Republicans in general are against science, which scares me. It looks like they want this country to become a theocracy. Not supporting stem cell research will put the USA behind in the medical field.

I support stem cells... so long as the extraction process does not harm any living life forms.

The possibilities offered by stem cells, both in understanding our own bodies down to cures for the innumerable volume of diseases afflicting the human population.

However, the greater the potential, the greater the degree of risk and danger. A quick look through horror stories and films should reveal some sci-fi dangers which can be made very real through progress achieved through stem-cell research.

Humanity has proven itself to over-play on the positive aspects while underestimating the dangers of new technology. Which is why so many people might fear stem-cell research.

Imagine this, the depravation of the human mind knows no boundaries, what new dangers might we inflict on ourselves.

Stem cell research is something that needs a great deal of care and attention. It needs to open up to allow for spontenous innovation and progress but measure must be put in place to limit the dangers we introduce into this world.

I'm all for it and contrary to what one of the others answered, I don't believe they have to kill fetuses to get the cells, do they? I thought you could get stem cells from umbilical cords too.

I also support abortion and if there is something good that could come from the difficult decision to have one of those, maybe donating to the research could offset the harshness of that procedure?

You know....I'm wondering.......would the opposing Republicans and Right-to-Lifers turn down a treatment that could save their lives or the life of someone they love if it initially came from stem cell research? I just can't picture them being given all the options for treatments and the prognosis and being told that the one and only sure cure came from stem cells saying "Uh....no. I won't take that" or "No, my 5 yr old son with cancer can't have that treatment because I oppose the originating research process" can you? Didn't think so.

And I'm more Democrat than anything else.

republicans are for stem cell research, but most all liberal, Democrats and media, group adult and embryonic stem cells together. adult stem cells have made numerous cures, therapies and are a great advancement. embryonic stem cells, make a life, kill that life, and have had NOT ONE cure or potential cure to date. and many turn in to tumorous cells. but medical research cant patent adult stem cells, so they continue to push for embryonic stem cell research. because if they ever find anything they can makes millions of dollars on it. that is the difference you almost never hear about.

All the Christian right-wing Republican extremists concentrate on is EMBRYONIC stem cells, and they've tainted public opinion with their crap.

The TRUTH is that umbilical cord blood is full of the same type of stem cells that embryos have, and every living person produces their own stem cells every day. In fact, stem cells are regularly harvested by autologous donation by cancer patients before chemotherapy, and then used to create a new immune system afterwards.

Without stem cell research, many of the major diseases will go uncured. Stupid Bush.

I certainly do. When I was a younger fellow I think I might have had a different view, although not sure but as an older fellow now, 72, I think I would really vote for it if it were on a ballot. Prolonging a healther life and curing ailments and deseases is upper most in my mind now, now that I have to deal with those things. If you're healthy and young be careful how you answer this question. As you get older you tend to think a little more than react to a situation.

Yes, but if we find cures for all the bad diseases how will all the pharmaceutical companies make money and get rich?
And what about the shareholders?
Come on - the majority of the world has to suffer so others can get rich.
Why do you think cancer has been around so long? We are encouraged to also have immunisations against diseases that don't exist in western countried anymore. Governments encourage it because they get monetary kick backs from the companies who make the poisons.

I don't support embryonic stem cell research which is what all the hype is about. I don't believe in destroying life to cure or treat existing people. Stem cells can be derived from umbilical cord and from placentas. That is routinely discarded material. They don't need to mess with embryos.
