I'm hooked on old classic films and have been interested in this actress named, Norma Shearer. Big in the 30's and 40's. My favourite of her's is, "The Women" (1939). Do you have a favourite actor/actress and movie from this era?

Although "classics" technically, 'African Queen', 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Gone With the Wind' were not black and white movies. You might also check out Norma Shearer in the original versions of "Marie Antoinette" and "Romeo and Juliet"...if you can find them. If you like Ms. Shearer you might also enjoy the comedies of the great Claudette Colbert. In particular see "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable and "Midnight" with Don Ameche (both available on DVD). Katherine Hepburn is wonderful in "The Philadelphia Story" with Cary Grant and also Bette Davis in "All About Eve"....both comedies and both also available on DVD. Carole Lombard is also from the same period and very good in "My Man Godfrey" and "Twentieth Century". For additional B/W classics featuring strong performances by actresses I would also recommend "Dinner At Eight", "Grand Hotel", "Swing Time", "Sunset Boulevard", "Jezebel", "Now Voyager", "The Lady Eve", "Mildred Pierce", "Old Aquaintance", "The Thin Man" and "The Best Years of Our Lives".

I love Norma Shearer, she was tremendous. I like the Thin Man series. Claudette Corbert and Myrna Loy. I love the early movies from 20's, 30's and 40's. Many of the movies from the 40's and 50's, etc were re-makes from those eras. If you like silent films and comedy Harold Lloyd films.

Cary Grant- no one else has the great combination of being able to easily play the leading man (with the exception of Jimmy Stewart) in a comedy or a dramatic role. He usually played an everyday guy,but in a cool, sophistacated way. Some fave movies were:Arsenic & Old Lace,Topper,Father Goose,Charade,That Touch of Mink, and 70 some odd more!!

I love old movies but I'm not sure that I have ventured that far back or kept track of dates. Bettie Davis's movies seem like they come from that era but I know that they are probably the 50's. She is so dramatic, so intriguing. Thank you for keeping the old classics alive by reminding us and getting us talking about them.

James Cagney. Man, he was phenomenal. Angles with Dirty Faces, The Public Enemy, Yankee Doodle Dandy...every last one of them amazing films. I love Cagney, in fact, if I ever have a child, he/she will be named Cagney.
