A clear object on a clear slide over white light will appear nearly featureless. Iodine's purple, which makes the features of a white or colorless object on a microscope slide easier to see-- it enhances the contrast.

You would put iodine on the onion cell so that you can be able to see it through the microscope better. I did this in 8th grade?
