It depends on your church. It is not a requirement like the other three sacrements baptism, communion, and wedding (bride)... I do however know somebody who wore a white dress for conformation and was required to by her school/church.

Baptism, First Communion, you wear white dress.
I believe you can wear any kind of dress for your confirmation.
We wore white robes over our dresses, with out confirmation saint names. Ask your teacher or director.

white is ok for a confirmation, and you are right, as long as you are not going to a wedding, white is always the most safe color.
