Notice that -1/5 - 2/5 is really -3/5.

Your question is really one of subtraction.

6 1/5 take away 3/5.

Convert 6 1/5 to an improper fraction by multiplying 5 times 6 and adding 1.

Doing so we get: 31/5.

We now subtract 3/5 from 31/5.

31/5 - 3/5 = 28/5

They want the solution to the problem. It is broken into two sets of equations to show how it can be done. What is needed to be done is to convert the improper fraction of 6 1/5 to a complete fraction, 31/5 (6/1*5/5=30/5+1/5=31/5) and then subtract 3/5 from that which will equal 28/5 or 5 3/5.

they want the next in the pattern

6 1/5-3/5 = 6 1/5 - 1/5 - 2/5 = 6 1/5 - 1/5 - 1/5 - 1/5

at least that would be my guess. It just shows how to add or subtract fractions.
