I am applying to 5 UC Campus and 3 private schools USC, NYU, and Columbia. I know that they require 2 letters of recommendation. So it is pointless to have 5 or more right? I have friends who have 5 or 6 letters of recommendation? what is the purpose for that?

Maybe they are looking to have a few extra, then they can select which ones would be best for the application.

Maybe you don't like the way one is written or sounds...though they are all suppose to be complimentary for you, some will be better received than others.

It might depend on the program you want and who you're getting the letters from.

For example, if you want to major in English @ USC, you probably want to get letters from teachers who can speak of your literature and linguistic abilities from personal experience. If you want to get into a different program at UC-x, you might ask for letters from different teachers. This would bring the total obtained to more than 3, even though you might only be sending 3 to any one school.\

It might also be a matter of hedging their bets. Just because the school requires 3 doesn't mean you can't send more - especially if you can get another letter which addresses qualities or experiences which are unique or different than the rest of your letters. For example, if you spent the summer working for the Peace Corps, you might want to get a letter from your supervisor there, even if it has nothing to do with academics ... in whcih case, I would still get the 3 academic letters, and throw in the unique letter.

I just recently applied to graduate school, which required 3 letters. I sent 3. I got in (to a very good program). I would only be concerned if you can't get 3 teachers/supervisors to write you good letters.

Looks better on your application if more people write nice things about you.
