I think it means that you can show someone the way but they won't necessarily follow through with it OR You can't make someone do something just because you showed them how.(?)

You can only do so much for someone, then they have to stand up and do the rest for themselves.

Like helping someone find a job, you can suggest a place and put in a recommendation, but they will have to show up, fill out the app. and impress the bosses themselves.

It means that you can show someone the correct way of doing something, but you can't force him/her to do it.

It means you teach, tell, or show somone how to do something, but it doesn't mean they are going to do it!
