Why not have a go with the PIC chips? They are very popular, easy to use, have a simple instruction set and the tools are free from the microchip website. Maplin Electronics stock a range of PIC chips, books and development stuff, like programmers. Just type PIC into the search box on their website. If you want to splash out you can buy the development system for £157 but you can get virtually the same thing by buying the Velleman K8048 programmer kit for £21, which allows you to program and run a PIC chip. If you don't want to wave a soldering iron, you can get the same thing ready built for £41. Good luck!

6502 is a Motorola Microcontroller if I'm not mistaken, I did a university course on an Intel Microcontroller few years back. Intel 8050 is the name if I recall.
