It is not a discipline problem. He is very well behaved and is very eager to learn. He just seems to lose focus

This probably is not a very helpful answer to you, but there are so many things that could be causing this, and so many things that might be done to fix it, depending on the causes (of course) and on your son. Also, there's a very good chance there is no identifiable cause, AND there's the possibility that youre expectations are just too high right now. (I've been there.)

One thing for sure, he's a five year old boy! He has never needed to have much of an attention span. Assuming he's in Kindergarten I think you'll notice an improvement over the coming months. Beyond that, you need to do more research than asking us yahoos (and I don't mean that we're Yahoo users.)

There a many books written specifically about raising boys, and even many websites. Their is one my wife has read, called "The minds of Boys." by Michael Gurian

Beyond that, all I can offer is that if you start taking steps to improve his attention span, take it slowly, and don't put him on drugs.

Discipline can have a big change in your 5 year old son's attention span

While there is definitely a place for medications in the lives of some children, it is not a decision to be taken lightly. He's 5! How big of a problem is it? Have you considered consulting a child psychologist for advice? Whether he's in kindergarten or not, he may need time to mature..........my son was a non reader until 3rd grade......I'm a kindergarten teacher and was a special education teacher. His teachers wanted to refer him to special education, but I knew he would come into it in his own time.....I'm an advocate for special ed and believe that medication is frequently appropriate, but I seriously recommend professional help before making life altering decisions for your 5 year old son.
